Portraying Elizabeth: Anonymous 2011

This film was inspired by Shakespeare in love with it's fantasy feel; The film is about Edward De Vere Earl of Oxford and the theory that Shakespeare did not his own material, in fact he was a fraud, a liar "You have no voice"- said De Vere to Shakepeare quoted in the film.

The film captures Tudor England so well, with the harshness, fire, darkness of that Tudor times. The film is nothing to do with English History but portrays it well, it is all fictional madness.

I expected Queen Elizabeth I to be admired throughout the film, with her guard up and a stern, powerful woman. However, she is ditzy and very promiscuous, she sleeps around with many men, she has several children who are then shipped off, you seriously can't keep up with her in the film, it is very odd and I felt this didn't work well, I was shocked for them to represent her this way.

However, it was interesting to see her this way as everyone portrayed her the complete opposite and I believe she was that way. You see her older self first in the movie played by Joely Richardson who is elegant charming, a flirt, and lured men in.

Vanessa Redgrave and Rafe Spall 2011 movie

Her make-up is very traditional Elizabethan with the pale complexion. red toned lips and cheeks; her hair is long a red in colour which reminded me of when I watched Elizabeth the movie as they both had similarities with the way they looked and what they wore. Her clothes were large, gold, red and embellished, her accessories as she became Queen and got older got more elaborate, her clothes were more detailed too.
Throughout the film Elizabeth is reflected back to when she was young and back to her "now" the old Elizabeth played by Vanessa Redgrave who is exactly in real life Joely Richardson's mother. She is sweet, you can see her pale complexion with the make-up, her slightly red cheeks and lips, you can really see her age , her lines and wrinkles show up, reflecting her age. Her hair becomes tightly curled and pinned to her head, her clothes are very traditional Elizabethan with the accessories, jewels, gems and high collared large gowns.

I felt this film was okay, fairly strange with the way they portrayed Queen Elizabeth, but it was interesting to see and witness their version of her. I feel there are a lot of  stories and secrets of Elizabeth and this showed a modern day audience their fictional version of her, who knows some of it could of been true.
